NEWS RELEASE

No Further Increase On Bus Fares

Tuesday 4th September, 2007, St. George’s: The Ministry of Communication, Works and Transport is notifying the public that there has been no further increase in bus fares.

The most recent increase was August 15, 2007.

This increase came on the basis that the Bus Associations were requesting more than a fifty cents increase due to the hike in the price of oil and other general operational expenses.

It has been drawn to the Ministry’s attention that several bus men have been collecting fares that are not on the approved schedule.

The Ministry has been bombarded with complaints lately as it relates to passengers being overcharged, particularly school children.

The parents of these children have shown much concern.

In view of this, Minister of Works Sen. the Hon. Brenda Hood will be meeting on Friday with the bus associations to discuss the matter.

Since then, there has been no further increase.

A short drop is two dollars and fifty cents.

It was further agreed that Pre-Primary and Primary school children will pay half the adult fare.

Secondary School students out of uniform will pay the adult fare.

On Sundays, public holidays and late night service, the fare will reflect an increase between fifty cents to a dollar, depending on the route.

The Pay First system is being authorized by all bus associations.

The stipulated destinations and rates of travel are to be published on all buses, and some designated public places.
