PM Promises to Assist Young People

Thursday July 26th 2007, St. George’s: Prime Minister Dr. The Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell met with a group of young people today to discuss youth empowerment and various problems facing the youth. The group of young people included some persons who had been involved in deviant behaviour including one young man who had served jail time but now had a successful small business. The meeting, which was arranged by Minister of Youth Hon. Emmalin Pierre and the group of young people, was designed to create greater awareness between the Prime Minister’s office and the young people of the country. The meeting discussed youth empowerment including jobs, training opportunities, and sports. They also discussed youth violence and crime. The youngsters said that they were concerned about what was happening to some of the country’s young persons and said that they wanted to assist. They asked for support in spreading positive messages to young people which would encourage them to turn away from lawless behaviour.

The Prime Minister promised to assist these young men by ensuring that resources are brought to their communities. He announced plans to assemble a team of persons from different sectors to visit the blocks and hold discussion with the young people in the area with a view to providing opportunities for them. The Prime Minister also informed the youth about the many different projects and programmes which were coming on stream to bring opportunities and jobs.

The Prime Minister ended by complimenting the group of youngsters for initiating the meeting and said that their actions demonstrated that they were interested in making a difference. The Prime Minister also held a meeting with another group of young people later in the day. He noted that he would continue to meet different groups of young people to hear their views on a number of issues.
