2006-2007 GRENADA ISLAND SCHOLARSHIPS

Monday 3^rd December 2007- St. George’s: The Government of Grenada wishes to announce that based on the recommendation by the Caribbean Examination Council, the following persons have been awarded Island Scholarship for 2006- 2007:

· Ms. Liselle Joseph

· Mr. Mikhail Burke

· Mr. Troy Antoine(TVET)

Cabinet has also approved the amended policy for the award of Grenada Island Scholarships.

The following framework will now be adopted for the award of the Grenada Island Scholarships:

1. The Grenada Island Scholarships be given to recognize and award exceptional performance in post-secondary education by eligible persons based on the criteria in the Education Act;

2. The Scholarships should give multiple awards distributed in areas of study that reflect broad human resource development linked to the general areas of study in academia and training;

3. The maximum number of Scholarships to be awarded annually will be 4 and chosen from the following disciplines:

· Natural Science

· Social Sciences

· Humanities and

· Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

4. Consideration will be given to awarding at least one (1) scholarship per discipline. However, the top performer in each discipline must satisfy the established criteria. Should there be no eligible candidate in a particular area; but more than one in another; Cabinet may award a second scholarship to one of the eligible candidates.

5. An awardee who has been given a Grenada Island Scholarship in a particular discipline and who wishes to change the area of study to another discipline must seek and obtain permission of the Ministry of Education;

6. The scholarships from all areas except TVET would be based on students’ performance in the CAPE examinations;

7. The scholarship for TVET will be based on the students’ performance at the T.A. Marryshow Community College. The awardee must satisfy the criteria outlined below:

· An overall GPA of above 3.5 (If the GPA of the student with the highest performance is between 3.0 and 3.5, Cabinet reserves the right, nonetheless, to award the scholarship.)

· No failing grades on transcript

· No semester with a GPA of below 2.0

· Carried at least 12 credits each semester.

8. The Grenada Island Scholarship with the exception of the award for TVET will be tenable at the University of the West Indies;

9. The award for TVET will be tenable at the University of Technology (Jamaica) or any other regional technical university;

10. The top performer of any year will, in addition to being given the undergraduate award at the University of the West Indies may be awarded a 1 year scholarship to pursue graduate studies, provided that the awardee graduates with at least an Upper Second Class Honours Degree from the University.
