Eight Trained as Life Guards

Wednesday 29th, August 2007. St. George’s: The ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Government of Grenada is conducting a twelve weeks training programme for life guards at the Grand Anse Beach.

Eight young men are being trained both in the theory and practical aspects of life saving in the three levels recognized by the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS). The three levels include:

v       Life 3 - which equips trainees for saving lives in a swimming pool or waterfall

v       Bronze Medallion - where they are trained to save lives at sea

v       Award of Merit - where they are also trained to save people at sea with a greater level of difficulty.

The program is an initiative of the Government that seeks to improve the level of safety and security at Grenada’s major beaches and water-based attractions.

According to Mr. Francis Robertson of the Ministry of Tourism the programme is of national benefit and with the added security both foreigners and nationals will feel more secure when utilizing the beaches.

One of the trainees of the programme Mr. Shemar Burris expressed his gratitude to the Government for the opportunity of a lifetime and said that he hopes the lifeguards make a difference in the life of beach goers. He also said that other young people male or female should take advantage of this opportunity and in so doing play their part in nation building.

The young men are being trained by Mr. Michael Davidson and at the end of the programme they will be tested by president of the Caribbean Life –Saving Association, Mr. Carlyle Huggins of Trinidad and Tobago.

The young men receive a stipend for their training and are looking forward to the completion of the program.
