FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
TORONTO, ONTARIO October 8, 2004: On September 7th 2004, Hurricane Ivan, one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the Caribbean region in the last 10 years, ravaged Grenada with rain and winds of 220 km per hour. 'Ivan,' a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, left behind an unimaginable scene of destruction and despair on this tri-island nation of 102,000 inhabitants.
The Consulate General of Grenada in collaboration with community members created initiatives to help in the rebuilding of Grenada. As a result, an account was setup at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), 460 University Ave., Toronto, Ontario, Account #2608731 and Transit #04702. On September 29, 2004, $85,000.00 CDN was transferred from the Consulate’s account to the Government of Grenada Hurricane Ivan Relief Fund at Bank of Nova Scotia, St. George’s, Grenada, Account #3000978.
Furthermore, an estimated $58,000 US was received from I AM CO, to cover the shipping cost for the relief supplies donated. As of today, 6 x 40’ containers of relief supplies, such as: toilets, sinks, construction supplies, generators, tarpaulins, tents, mattresses, food, water, medical supplies, toiletries and clothing, have been shipped to the National Emergency Recovery Organisation (NERO) in Grenada.
